thankyou all for the support! im working on forcenet, a kind of facebook for the defence force, learnt how to make automated test suites with nunit, powershell, selenium and visual studio so far, im more interested in VR and robotics but this is the stepping stone ive been waiting for.

arduino or raspberry pi is a good place to start, the arduino starter kit walks you through breadboards and basic components, what they do and how you can program them. the language for arduino is 'sketch'. Raspberri pi is a bit more advanced with wifi and multi processing capabilities. You can get some really cool extension boards online and start coding them to do things straight away with python.
C and C++ for more advanced projects maybe
