On web, do you not use facebook? 82.3% website in the world supported by PHP(From google I can not say it is correct or not). But I know it is most popular server side script. Also you can create GUI apps for windows download gtk for that. But it is little slow but a small piece of code can create a good GUI app that java or c++ take more lines. Anyway, get back to server side, today most of hosting server site support PHP. In PHP you can create a webpage more easily as well as in less code. I don't know why people say that professional programmers hate PHP. Then, they should see the world. Either the people who said these thing are idiot or 5 million developers and some of them are earning in billion. It is a great language just enjoy it. Hope it help you
