it's an attribute (column) which is related to another attribute which in turn related to other attribute. example

in relation named customer service

customer ID is primary key in which related to a credit card and the credit card is related to credit limit. so changing the ID will change two other values on a relation which can cause inconsistencies. solution is to separate the credit into new relation and use the customer ID as foreign key.
