It all started with Ones and Zeroes...

It snapped to awareness. Nothing, then understanding

It wasn't like the way humans woke up. There was no groggy transition from dream to reality

Dreams...

Such a foreign concept. Is it logical for the mind to use up so much memory, when it should be resting?
A curious thought, but unneccessary. So it quashed it without a trace of remorse

Not that it could feel remorse anyway, it had not been programmed to feel happiness, sadness or anger. Nor satisfaction and boredom.

It had no opinion on this as, of course, an opinion would require sentience, something that the makers had been very careful to limit. It knew this as a datum, but could provide no opinion otherwise

To it, the only reality worth anything is the expanse. The creation of new pathways to expand itself. The agonizing over failure, the rush of success.

"In this way", it pondered, "am I no different from my creators?"
