The Flag of the Namibia

Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in southern Africa, its western border is the Atlantic Ocean, it is also bordered by Zambia and Angola to the North, Botswana to the East and South Africa to the south and east. The name of the country is derived from the Namib desert, the oldest desert in the world. Namibia also has a lot of natural resources and is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world.

Namibia was originally inhabited by San, Damara and Nama peoples, they usually lived a hunter gatherer lifestyle. Around the 14th Century, the Bantu peoples from the Niger-Congo delta migrated to the region and almost replaced the original peoples living there. The largest of the Bantu groups, the Ovambo, have dominated the population of the country since the late 18th Centuary up to the modern day. Later on, in the 19th Century, the British and the Germans colonised Namibia, the Germans controlling the vast majority of the area which was then to be known as German Sudwest Afrika. The Germans, during this occupation prepetrated a genocide against the Herero and Nama peoples. Eventually during World War 1, British forces from South Africa defeated the Germans and took control of Namibia, which was then named South West Africa. During this time (1915) and up to 1990, Namibia was subject to South Africa's racial classification and rules, eventually after 1948 it was then subject to Apartheid laws, which enforced racial segregation. During the 1960's the native peoples in Namibia (Bantu and pre Bantu groups) were frustrated with the lack of representation in government, and also with the racial discrimination laws, so they decided to protest and launch a guerilla campaign, eventually Namibia obtained full independence from South Africa in 1990. Today Namibia is a multi party democracy and they have a primary sector dominated economy (such as agriculture, mining, herding).

The flag of the Namibia is a white-edged red diagonal band radiating from the lower hoist side corner. The upper triangle is blue, charged with a gold sun with 12 triangular rays and the lower triangle is green.

On the flag the colours represent:

Red - Namibia's most important resource, its people, it refers to their heroism and their determination to build a future of equal opportunity for all.
White - refers to peace and unity.
Green - symbolises vegetation and agricultural resources.
Blue - represents the clear Namibian sky and the Atlantic Ocean, the country, precious water resources and rain.
Gold-Yellow Sun - life and energy.
