Terms to know

Java

Java is a general purpose programming language that is class based, object oriented, and designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible.

OOP

Object-oriented Programming refers to a type of computer programming in which programmers define the data type of a data structure, and also the types of functions that can be applied to the data structure.

Data Type

A particular kind of data item as defined by the values it can take, the programming language used, or the operations that can be performed on it.

Class

A class is a user defined blueprint or prototype from which objects are created. They consist of Modifiers, A Name, Superclasses (if any), Interfaces (if any) and a Body.

Object

A basic unit of OOP and it represents real life entities. They consist of state, behaviour and identity.

Abstraction

The process of taking away or removing characteristics from something in order to reduce it to a set of essential chracteristics.

Inheritence

A mechanism in which an object acquires all the properties and behaviours of a parent object.

Encapsulation

Wrapping up of data under a single unit. It binds together code and the data it manipulates. Also known as data hiding. (Public, Private, etc)

Polymorphism

Greek: "Many Forms". It occurs when we have many classes that are related to each other by inheritence. Polymorphism uses those inherited methods to perform different tasks, and allows us to perform a single action in different ways.

JRE

The Java Runtime Environment is a set of software tools for development of Java applications.

JVM

The Java Virtual Machine is a virtual machine that enables a computer to run Java programs as well as programs written in other languages that are also compiled to Java bytecode.
