Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the greatest mathematicians the world had ever witnessed, flourished in the most adverse circumstances and died very young. But in this short life span he gave the world the formulae which is helping unravel knots in the areas ranging from computer science to cancer research and polymer chemistry even today.

Born on December 22, 1887, in Kumbakonam of Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan came from a poor Brahmin family. Ramanujan's interest in Mathematics was evident from his very childhood. He could calculate the length of the equator by him self and was curious about the distances and shapes of stars. He passed matriculation in first class from a high school in Kumbakonam and joined college. But too wrapped up in mathematics to study any other subject, he flunked twice in the exam. He started giving tuition to earn some money but what he taught was beyond the understandings of the students and soon they left him.
