Content Creation and Community Guidelines

Welcome to Sololearn

Sololearn hosts a community of coders across the globe who come together to learn, connect, grow professionally and personally, to help and be helped by their peers. The community welcomes people of all ages, genders, and identities. Mutual acceptance, respect, and a desire to learn and support one another are the key components to Sololearn’s thriving community.

Be Kind: behind each profile is a person that deserves kindness and respect. Personal attacks, disparagement, hate speech, and personal judgements will not be tolerated.
Stay on Topic: all posts and questions should be related to coding, programming, or Sololearn itself. This can include posts related to learning, improving skills, professional and personal growth, and peer support. Any links to external sites or content need to also follow these principles.

Content and interactions which violate our guidelines may be subjected to deletion by Sololearn or Sololearn moderators. Plagiarism, spam, and using dishonest methods to gain experience points (XP) on Sololearn, i.e. creating multiple accounts to cheat in Challenges, upvoting your own content, is also prohibited. Users that violate these guidelines may be subject to disciplinary action, including warnings and account bans.

Listed below are the rules and purpose of Sololearn’s key features to help maintain an environment where everyone feels comfortable, creative, and appreciated. All content and interactions must abide by the Sololearn Terms of Use.

Sololearn Profile

You are able to customize your display name, biography, and profile picture. These are publicly viewable and should be consistent with Sololearn’s policies. They must be safe for work (SFW), i.e. not containing graphic nor adult imagery, nor containing targeted harassment towards an individual or group. As stated within the Terms of Use, please refrain from any Personally Identifiable Information. You are not allowed to impersonate Sololearn staff, moderators, Mentors, other users, nor infringe upon anyone else’s intellectual property. Sololearn and its moderation team reserve the right to alter or remove profile content that violate these rules.

Sololearn Discuss

Sololearn’s Discuss, sometimes referred to as Q&A, section is designed as a place for learners to seek out or provide help to their peers. Questions and comments should remain on topic.

Tips for writing a great Discuss post:

Title: Summarize what help you need or what you're looking for in the post title.
Description: State precisely what help or guidance you are asking for. Be sure to include a link to your attempt or copy-paste the code you are having trouble with when applicable.
Tags: Tag your question with the specific coding language, Lesson, specific area of coding, and/or specific Sololearn feature the post is about. If the post is not in English, please tag it with the language you used!

The following is a non-exhaustive list of inappropriate content examples and expectations.

General or open-ended questions

There is some leniency with general questions and open-ended discussions that relate to coding and programming or Sololearn itself, given the value it can provide to new learners in navigating their learning journey. Regardless, these discussions and questions are best suited to the Activity Feed to avoid cluttering this section for users trying to find specific help.

Gibberish or incomplete questions

Questions should be posted as threads and articulated as clearly as possible. Ideal questions will include a title that summarizes the issue or question, a description detailing the exact problem, clearly stating the goal of the question, and appropriate tags. Coding assignments posted without proof of any attempts to solve the problem may be considered an incomplete question.

Spam and advertisements

Any form of spam or advertisement that focuses on the promotion of a product or service, regardless of whether it is programming-related, is not allowed in this section. Users are also discouraged from tagging other users in any area without their express permission. Over-tagging other users may be considered spam.

Duplicate questions

Chances are if you have a specific question – it’s been asked and answered! When possible, try searching for your question prior to posting. Experienced users may reply to a new learner’s post, directing them to an already answered version of their question, and duplicate threads will subsequently be removed.

Non-topical questions

Sololearn is a programming and coding learning platform. As such any questions not within those topics are not a good fit for this section.

When in doubt, remember that the Discuss section is for community members to provide and receive help from each other. Discuss should always be held true to this purpose. For this to happen effectively, experienced users are expected to encourage, educate, and be patient with new learners who may not be accustomed to asking questions online or know very little about coding, instead of belittling or attacking beginners that inadvertently violate the guidelines stated above.

Sololearn Activity Feed

Sololearn’s Activity Feed area is considered a “not-actively monitored” zone for community members to share anything code-related with their followers. This section is still subject to all of Sololearn’s policies. Below are some rules to help ensure your posts do not violate any policies. Before posting any content to the Activity Feed, please check that it is appropriate for a diverse audience.

Posts and comments should not include:

Language, images, or references that are harmful, inappropriate, or offensive.
Content that glorifies, encourages, or incites violence.
Links that redirect to any third-party content that contains any of the above.

These rules are universal to content creation and interactions in Sololearn and should always be followed. Please remember to avoid openly sharing Personally Identifiable Information. Sololearn and its moderation team reserve the right to remove posts in the Activity Feed that violate its policies.

Sololearn Lesson Comments Section

The comments section on each lesson is accessible by all learners within that course. The purpose of this section is to allow learners to share their thoughts, encouragement, tips, common mistakes, further information, and even ask questions within a lesson. You should not post the answer to a problem without an accompanying explanation of how you came by the answer. “Answer-only” questions are unhelpful to the learning process and will be removed by Sololearn and its moderation team. Any comment not related to that specific lesson will also be removed.

Sololearn Code Playground

Code Playground is where you can write code, share your creations, and play with code from other members of the community. Each code can be saved publicly or privately. If you save a code as public, you are publishing the code as your own creation. Apart from ensuring that your public code does not violate any Sololearn policies or community guidelines, you must also provide credits to other authors or sources used within your code, when applicable. Other sources include, but are not limited to, code snippets, audio, and images. Failure to provide credit within your published code whenever applicable will be considered plagiarism, and will be handled accordingly by Sololearn and its moderation team.

Sololearn strives to ensure that all code published to the Code Playground will not affect normal operation of our application nor users’ devices, but there may be corner cases which have yet to, or cannot be, handled properly. We request that users refrain from creating code of malicious nature, which aim to disrupt normal operation of the Sololearn application.

Sololearn Direct Messages (DM)

The Direct Messaging feature allows users to send private messages to each other individually or in private groups. While these direct messages are private and therefore beyond the jurisdiction of Sololearn and its moderation team, we still expect users to follow Sololearn’s policies in this area. Harassment, abuse, and other inappropriate behavior is prohibited. If you receive a direct message that violates these guidelines or discover another user abusing this feature, you are encouraged to 1) block the user who sent the message, and 2) report the user directly to Sololearn (info@sololearn.com), including any relevant screenshots. Direct messaging capability is unlocked after several weeks of activity.

What is Personally Identifiable Information?

Personally Identifiable Information (PII) refers to any content, data, or material that could be used to easily identify an individual. This includes any information or material that could distinguish one person from another, or anything that could be used to compromise the anonymity of other information.

PII is defined as information that 1) directly references someone (for example, name, address, social security number, or other identifying number or code, telephone number, email address, etc) or 2) indirectly references someone (information that could be used to identify an individual when combined with other information). For example, information like gender, race, birth date, geographic indicator, or other descriptors could be combined with other information to personally identify someone.

Any information you share in our community (including personal information) is, by design, open to the public and not private. Think carefully before sharing any personally identifiable information in any public place.

Remember that information shared here, and in any online community, can be seen, disclosed to, or collected by third parties, and may be used by others in ways we cannot control or predict, including to contact you for unauthorized purposes. As with any public forum, the information you post may also show up in third-party search engines. Keep in mind that when something is deleted from Sololearn, it may take a while for third-party search engines to re-index and therefore remove it from searching.

If you unintentionally post personal information in our community, Sololearn and its moderation team have the right to remove the post to protect your personally identifiable information.

Content Ownership and Right to Post

You retain ownership of and responsibility for the content you create, including but not limited to codes, posts, quizzes, and lessons. You also allow Sololearn certain rights that enable us to display and share your posted content. You retain control over your content, and you are responsible for it. The rights you grant to us are limited to those needed to provide the service. We have the right to remove content or close accounts, if necessary.

If you are posting content you did not create yourself, you agree that you will only submit content that you have the right to post, and you will fully comply with any third-party licenses relating to the content you post.

Community Guidelines for Mobile
