How to increase partition?

i have partitioned my hd and installed linux in it. i have partitipned it to 40gb.How can i increase the partition without ruining my os

Just adding an alternative to @Paul's answer, I found this link, it seems feasible, but anyways, considering it is a critical operation, I would strongly advise you to make Backup first, it is crucially necessary if you have valuable data in the disk.
