"<em>" means IMPORTANT and "<i>" means just ITALIC, according Web standards.

sorry. it appears I was wrong. em is emphasis and I is for italics but they have the same visual result of italicized text. they appear to be old and new tags of HTML that behave differently. I'd suggest reading the discussion in kuba's link for more info
