The % symbol stands for the modulus operator. This operator returns the remainder.
For example, 44 / 5 = 8 with a remainder of 4. Thus, 44 % 5 = 4.

It returns the remainder value. Think of it as what is left after you devide one number by another. So..
9%4 is equal to 1, and..
13%5 would be 3.
Hope this helps clarify it for you.
