How does a PHP script actually run on the server?

I mean I don't know how it runs. If I want to build a website by choosing an online server, does it run automatically without installing any software on the server? Or does it require some special setting up before these scripts run? What is the whole thing?

Actually when you upload any website on server it upload into their (who provides service) physical system where PHP Server is already installed. So you don't need to do anything just upload your website on any live server.
