Did we need JDK to use 'javac' command in command prompt?

I installed JRE I'm having windows 8.1 64 bit I'm able to use 'java' command in command prompt but not able to use 'javac' in command prompt

Did you check the path variables in your environment like James mentioned?

Java Development Kit. Install it and follow the instructions to set your path variables.

Jre installs jdk automatically. You just need to define the correct path in your environments

what path? where is my jdk man I don't have jdk I installed JRE but I don't have jdk
