Java combined with ... ?

Currently I am learning java and I want to master it. I need your opinions about what to do at the same time to get stronger around java development. As far as I know XML and design patterns are "must have" skills.

I'd recommend to read 'Efficient Java' and something about Clean Code and then move on to Java EE, database connection, gui (depending on your interests) and some famous frameworks (Spring MVC etc, Hibernate) maybe. Also knowing a build / dependency management tool (gradle or maven) comes in handy.
