It could just be a variable in programming. But in math, it is defined as the imaginary number with a value equivalent to the square root of negative 1.

If you are talking about the i as in an integer loop like if (var i = 0; i < 10; i++) i only is a variable to store what you are working with.

You can change i to anything you like :)
It's pseudo code, not directly related to python just to show you how it works.
