In 6 months you can handle the basics of a language and have a good sense of how things are done.

Keep in mind that knowing many aspects of a language is something that takes time and in most cases is impossible. There are people who have been learning for years and still constantly discover new things (basically this is because languages cover a very wide range and each person concentrates in an area that is of interest to them)
