Linux is an open source operating system mainly used for regular uses like in PC's , Laptops etc. and is regularly updated by a community of hackers present globally, also it is totally free of cost for both purchase and maintainence.
whereas UNIX is an operating system mainly used for running servers and has been developed by different brands like at&t, hp etc. it is paid for both purchase and maintainence . it may not be open source.
