Documents displaying On my Website

I need help with displaying or viewing documents on my website instead of them downloading to my local drive after clicking on a link. I need them to display on a new tab. I tried "ViewerJS", but it didn't output the docs, just a blank screen.

by document do you mean .PDF .zip or other than code for opening new tab is <a href=pathtodoc.pdf target="_blank"> but it will same as the other code actually browser have plugins to view extra files but if does not have then it downloads it
