How does the browser choose which font of generic family to use?

I'm not really good at fonts, and I didn't quite catch this "font" and "generic" families-thing. If I understand it correctly, generic family is like a bunch of alike fonts. But how does the browser choose exactly which font to use?

browsers have their default fonts if no font is specified by the coder, it's up to you to know each browsers default
