In standard HTML the head tag contains things the browser will use to help in rendering the webpage. Meta tags, script, style, linked resources, etc...
The body tag will contain items to be rendered. Divs, tables, input, etc...
Your code still worked because the browsers today will automatically close a tag if they detect your code has transitioned to a new section.
