Learn Kali Linux.

If you don't know what it is then you are definitely not ready for 'hacking'. It's the number one go-to tool for any cybersecurity enthusiast.

There are no dumb questions. No worries.

The fact you are saying 'grey hat' is a red flag. I wouldn't say that openly so lightly.

Seventeen years of experience.

As M Squared said, base system is Kali Linux, you must to know and work with that. Next you can practice with anothers distribution like Parrot or for Windows you can search Pengowin. All of this you can practice with virtual machines ISO, VDK, etc for Virtual Box, VM Ware, Qemu, etc

Mk.... Dumb question, but what is that?

Well, I will reiterate what I said before. If you want to learn you need to get used to using Linux as your default workspace. Kali Linux is the kernel that has all the security tools you will need. Now I will warn you, if you exploit the tools and you don't know what you are doing, you will get caught very easily. Before I became a full on software developer I spent a good amount of years learning Backtrack5 before Kali Linux was launched. Just use responsibly. As a bonus, learn Bash and Python scripting. It helps with launching attacks through automation rather than doing everything manually in the terminal.

Does SL delete threads often?

Ready? If you can break a WPA2-PSK within 24 hours I'd say you got your feet wet enough. Assuming it is a secured network for pen-testing.

No problem, dude.

Nope.

I have no idea what a WPA2-PSK is lol. How do you know all this stuff?

Wow. But like what resources to I use to gain enough knowledge to be able to answer questions like this thread in seventeen years xd. What do you suggest?

There is no substitution for practice. Learn by 'doing'. Reading theory is just half the battle.

I know there is also an app somewhere where you can emulate the Linux terminal on a Windows platform.

Take an introductory course explaining the basics (CEH can be pretty easy these days) and note the essential integral steps (even if you don't get the details enough);
Once you have a mindmap about where to start, strengthen those areas that are more needed and used thought practice (may it be scripting, vulnerability scanning, forensics, etc...)
You have to have a good grip on scripting, terminal commands, general security structures, and... pretty much most essential info to get into the competition.
One side note though as others may have mentioned, practice only makes you stay in the game;
The moment you quit dealing with real issues, you're game overed!
Ask yourself:
Am I confident enough with:
— printing a list of thousands and searching them through?
— commanding in bash/zsh terminal?
— regular expressions?
— ...

Mk. And if I wanted to do some light grey hat? Should I?

What Im asking is: in your opinion, when would I be “ready” for ethical hacking.
