How can I create a money/joke counter?

ok so i know that question doesnt make alot of sense however i had a conversation at work with a co-worker about how much we would save if we put 2 dollars away every day etc. etc. however i would also like to run a program as a joke for my wife she apologizes for everything and as a joke we tell her everytime she says sorry she owes 1 dollar I am still learning alot and just looking for some advice on how to start this counter.

I mean, you could make a program that opens a file, and adds a number to a number already there (0 at the beginning), or you could just have a program running at all times that you can input an amount to add with.
