1. Go to a jobsite that is used in your country.
2. In the jobsearch, search for your town + a programming language.
3 Count number of hits
4 Repeat step 2 and 3 with another programming language
With this approach you remove opinions from your decision- making and pay attention to what the job market actually wants.
BTW I just tried this for the town I live. Just as an example, Java got 299 matches while Ruby got 7. That tells me what to focus based on where I live.
EDIT There is of course more to the choice of programming languages, some languages may be up and coming. You may have interest is a certain domain; web development, mobile development or software testing, and should choose a programming language that fits your needs. But above all, I recommend a radical pragmatism. You don't want to spend time on a language that won't get you hired.
