Ash[Boy In Regret] to begin with question 1 yes gemfile and no you can't modify it..
Sololearn is sandboxed.
Here is what is offered via the sandbox ...

Ash A sandbox sets certain perimeters which either restricts certain behavior or prohibits others. They merely are safeguards some companies put in place. Even big data companies use them to safeguard their systems as to not contaminate potential unforseen behaviors.

Ash as you know Sololearn is more for pre-academic training unlike GitHub or Codepen or other reposits. Most codes here are not for commercial purposes.

Ash I recall a time irl when ruby and rails framework was a thing and then they dropped rails, interest dropped, then ruby started rebuilding some interest .. but python slid ahead during the ruby and rails era..
Just like Perl fell to python .. There is still a huge Perl community but Python is everywhere.

I have limited Ruby knowledge so can not answer most of your questions. All programs on SoloLearn have a fixed time limit that can not be changed except web which runs on your device. People running Python have added libraries so installing gems is possible, if Ruby gives you a method to run shell commands. All languages beyond web work the same. Get the input from the user. Run the program on a server. Send the resulting output back to the user. We have no method to interact with the program. It could be done, but it would tie up the server for the entire interaction so SoloLearn chose not to. Beyond that, Ruby interpreter is identical to one you could use on your computer.
