Java vs. JavaScript

Hi everyone,

I was wondering, if one was to choose between Java and JavaScript, in today's standards, which would be the viable option?

I am currently learning JavaScript as it could be interrelated with other Front End languages such as HTML and CSS for web development. Java is also a language used in this area, but as far as I know, the applets for it were discontinued recently.

Thus, I wanted to know which language would be advantageous in terms of features, accessibility, future demand/careers, etc.

Attention! HTML and CSS are not programming languages. Nor scripting languages. They can be simple scripts or tags or markup languages that are interpreted (not compiled) by the Web Browsers.

Also, Applets were discontinued a long time ago, not recently. I think that are more than 5 years ago. They were an unreliable, unstable, hard to program technology.
