Does making Minecraft Mods make you a better programmer?

Hi, I am thinking of making mods with Java. But, I don't know of it will improve my skills as a Java programmer. If modding does, give some examples of java games I could mod or hack.

Not in all aspect I guess, but in terms of game modding, maybe. I mean Java is much more than just game mods, what you master by modding games may not be implementable in other fields : )

Oh, I mean my robotics club wants me to study java since their robot operates on java, so you know any way I can practice java?
