Why not try to look at this question from their perspective? just picture you are a Human Resources personnel for Google or Microsoft, then you are assigned to interview someone who knows some basic codes, what would be your decision, would you tell them that they are accepted and good remuneration is in order?.
You know the competition, company has to strive to always keep the pace, give the best there is, create and roll out high quality products with fresh innovative ideas, would you accept someone who needs a lot of investment or one that had invested in themselves, I guess at this point you can figure it out.
I didn't mean to be rude or discouraging, was just saying a simple logical thought : )
