It depends on the person and their drive to make it happen. Some will never get there. They can become a good programmer and have work for as long as they wish. But, expert isn't easy. These days it is much harder than when I started.

For me, there is no definite amount of time it takes to become an expert in programming. Everyone has their own learning pace, and computing is an ever-changing environment. New technologies are always coming and programmers have to keep up. We never stop learning.

I agree with to @Jericho Arcelao I donā€™t take anyone really ever becomes an expert. Thereā€™s always something to learn or something you can add or something new to make. Even billionaires, like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates (who started learning programming in elementary school) should not be considered experts. Iā€™m assuming you want to gain proficient knowledge and it can takes year, but luckily there are stones of resources. Also some advice, you have web and game tags. Figure out what area you want to focus in because itā€™s much easier to be good in one area than three.
