To add to @John Wells' & @Stellar Fox's answers, contributing to SoloLearn & its community is a plus, but that will not guarantee your role as a moderator. Your chances will climb if it's clear that you actually ENJOY making contributions to SoloLearn & its community. Making contributions ONLY to achieve moderatorship isn't only a waste of your time, but the chances of success at acquiring the role will also be significantly reduced as a result. Legitimately caring about the community is when the larger brownie-points are awarded (without your knowledge) and considerations are noted to be thoroughly evaluated during one of the future nominations. Moderators are seen as masters of the community. This is not due to the number of questions they answer, how many issues they resolve, how popular they are, nor how skilled they are when it comes to programming. Moderators are masters of the community because they truly care about the community. When a person legitimately cares about someone or something, they will contribute their time as well as whatever they can offer so that the overall well-being and/or health is at its best. If you care about something, you look after it by "moderating" its well-being. Moderatorship is not an achievement. Contributing and moderating the community IS the achievement. The moderator-badge is simply SoloLearn's way of saying "We've noticed your contributions, and we thank you for them."

First, we have to be needing more moderators. When that occurs, people who are and have been active in Q&A will be considered. Making SoloLearn a better community is what you will be judged on.

@blue There are more ways than I'm able to mention in one answer-bubble. To summarize it .. The mods and SL work together to find people (when/if it's needed). Nominations for moderatorship aren't common, so the strategies that current mods use could change/evolve in the future, depending on whether or not more mods are suddenly needed. If SoloLearn is okay with disclosing specific methods, then you may prompt them via info@sololearn.com. Other than that, any "specific" information or strategies won't be mentioned, due to a user's knowledge of such methods granting him/her ways of being able to manipulate their way into moderatorship. My original answer is your best bet. "If you care and contribute, you have a chance".

@3 moderators but how do you find the people overall? Are they in a ranking in which who comments the most AND cares about the community?

No you do not. I answer at least 10 a day, and sometimes more than 100, but mods are the best of the best, you have to truly earn it.
