silly question, but I have a hard time deciphering what this means, may I get some help please? i -= 1

It is equivalent to:
i = i - 1

To get it I used to read it while writing it as follows:
i .. saying i
- .. saying is reduced
= .. saying by
1 .. saying one
so i-=1 is "i is reduced by 1"
if you want to increase by 2 for example:
"I is increased by 2"
i + = 2
