How much does a programmer work a day?

Depends on the scheduled deadline and amount of tasks to be completed. Personal preference is also a factor. Too many variables in play with too little information to provide a meaningful answer.

I've worked 36 hours straight many times in my career because the deadline was close and no one else had my bug finding & fixing skills.

in some countries the law limits the number of hours an employer can ask you to work ... but then most programmers i know do extra hours on their own to expand their skills or on personal projects.

Though there are a lot of examples of spending many weeks restless but ultimate word is that also a Programmer has a lot of Scopes and enjoys leisure time with family and friends.Actually a good Programmer has liberty to manage his working schedule by himself,it gives him a lot of opportunities to participate several seminars, discussions,get together parties, family parties, spending time personally with his family.
