I'd ask them what they want to do:
- make a website
- make a game
- make a general program (calculator, task manager, messaging program, etc.)
- write network based programs, like servers
- make a mobile app (for Android or iOS, etc.)
- something else
Responses for me:
- HTML -> CSS -> JavaScript -> Node.JS and AngularJS and maybe PHP
- C++ -> Unreal Engine / Java -> LWJGL / C# or JavaScript -> Unity
- Python or Java or C# or C++ or JavaScript
- Ruby -> Ruby on Rails / Python -> Various Frameworks / Elixir
- Java -> Android Development -> XML -> Kotlin -> C++ -> Various Libraries / Swift or Objective-C -> iOS Development -> C++
- Python, probably

first of all find what it is you are looking to make. is it a website? is it an online app? is it a game? is it a mobile app? maybe some company software... after that find the suited language for you. give it time, practice a lot and make sure you learn some algorythm with it
good luck enjoy
