Sometimes hours -- I've had times I stay up for around 36 hours without sleep mostly working on code with breaks to eat. Also have days I barely even think about code though because of those previously mentioned days.

For some people at least it's good to take a break occasionally and let your mind clear out.

@Martin... LOL... You always crack me up!

@Tom... In my earlier years of programming, I couldn't imagine wanting it to be any different from those insanely long hours. Eventually, family enters the picture and life balance prevails. Becoming more efficient as a developer over the years has also helped avoid those crazy days of code binging. :)
