i think both have their own advantages,But i prefer to use php as compare to java because java are really very heavy and need more resources to run and it is also a memory hungry... php is a server side scripting language and execute on server but java is not a server side language it execute on clients computer,so if your client doesn't have the right program like jvm your webpage will not work as you want but php have not any this type of issue..
