You can try going to the 'Community' tab and swipe right to left to go to the 'Peers' section.
Tap the 'Discover Peers' button and type your friend's username in the search bar.
Once their profile comes up in the search results, you can tap the 'Follow' button beside their username or on their profile to follow them.
