Don't use Phonegap.
Try to learn React Native to build cross platform native apps.

And I don't think it's a bad idea. I have created my first mobile app not knowing Java only using HTML/CSS/JavaScript and jQuery. It's not very easy to compile, but if you learn, there is no prob to create an app.
