Yes it's a really good text editor and therfore good for this, however I strongly recommend using eclipse so you can run your code in eclipse without the console, eclipse is avavible for windos mac and linux so there shouldnt be any problems finding a good version. Good luck.

I use Netbeans and notepad++, I mostly use Netbeans for long programs and applications and Notepad++ for short and quicker algorithms. So both are good but depends on what your trying to make GUI and Applications is beat to use Netbeans and just programme Notepad++.
