2017 software versioning

Does anyone know why a lot of softwares out there are changing its versioning from [Major].[Minor].[Patch] or [Major].[Minor].[Update] to [Year].[Minor].[Patch, Update or something else] ? For example, some softwares was in version 2.3.5 and now are in 2017.1.0.

I think it is more convenient for the users to know the year of the release of that version, especially in case of IDEs .. Because usualy users care more about having the latest release than knowing witch version they are using

preplanned obsolescence, as well as frequent assertions and more subtly derisive moves requiring less maintenance as to appearance
