Why is everything seemingly impossible?

So this is part rant, part question... As some of you may know, I am failing my projevt miserably. I am about to miss the deadline so think I am off the course. There have been a lot of really helpful answers here from people, but I always seem to be a little short of success! For example: When I tries to do the step by step Cave game on Youtube, I cannot get SDL to work. My tutor won't accept.it anyway as I have to use Direct Draw. i have just spent 3 hours trying to draw a window.

DirectDraw is deprecated. Direct3d replaces it. Not sure there are still some resources on it on the web but will look.

I have downloaded the example code from my tutor, but as usual, the main programme is 208 lines long with about 20 attached headers and .cpp files. I don't believe you need all of this to do what SDL.appears to do in 2 lines! So, can anybody tell me how DirectDraw works please? If not, I am jacking this course in because I am utterly disappointed with the whole thing!
