Can I be a successful programmer without a college/university degree?

Im 19 years old & I want to know if I can survive without a degree? I can't afford to go to a college/university. I also have to help support my family. I really can not save up enough to pay for university. I can, however, save enough or set aside an amount to pay for online courses from Treehouse for example. I plan on learning programming myself from Codecademy, Treehouse, Books etc. Do you think this is a good approach? Will I be able to work as a programmer?
