The most I can give you is a lead to the NEAT implementation of NeuroEvolotion, where it's practically computer brains evolving. There's a thirty page paper from MIT that you can read. Google "NEAT algorithm" and it should be one of the first results in PDF format.

...complex AI? There are so many different types of Machine learning methdos, learning techniques and neural network topologies. Each have it's pros and cons so it's probably better to think about using the optimal learning techniques to solve your specific problem. The field is still evolving though, trying to solve broader set of problems using Artificial General Intelligence. Check out OpenAI and Reinforcement Learning techniques.
