Portfolio?

Question

What do you guys think are a couple good things to add to a development portfolio for a career? I need something that will be unique rather than just a calculator that anyone can make anytime.

I'm not necessarily new to programming but I'm also not very advanced so I need to do something within my skillset.

If nothing comes to mind feel free to disregard this question :)

Algorithms, man.
Try to write an algorithm that creates a game, (labyrinth, sudoku, 2048 or such) and solves it. That's good showcasing, confirms your algorithmic thinking.
