Latest news say if you're running a really low spec comp, chances are that WannaCry would stop responding on your device because it is resource-heavy and you can track and remove the process before it runs. There are also rumours that the ransomware cannot encrypt files with filenames which aren't made up of ASCII characters, but that's prolly untrue so better stay on the safe side.

not just a virus anymore it is a worm.( assuming you are talking about wannaCry) you do not have to visit a site or click a link or download and install a program. Just being on the internet with an unpatched pc puts you at risk. there are only three things that i know will keep you safe 1. installing all available updates 2 having a firewall that blocks all incoming traffic 3. unplugging all connections (including wifi) solution 1 is the easiest

++ If you get this worm DO NOT PAY! Chances are very high you will never recieve your key. Just accept that your files are lost. If you dont already perform backups. Maybe now is the time to start. NAS devices are pretty cheap now. USB drives are practically free. Get one. If you suspect you are already infected, just do the world a favour and unplug it from the internet. Once it infects a pc whilst encrypting your files it actively searches the network (inc the internet) for new hosts to infect..

The WannaCry ransomware was recently reported as an unprecedented global attack affecting 230,000 computers in 150 countries. The ransomware encrypts or password-protects data files, then demands payment of at least $300 from those who want to recover those files. It spreads via phishing emails, and also through computer worm attacks on unpatched systems. Microsoft has released security patch updates for all older systems including Windows XP. (Read theverge.com: Almost All WannaCry Victims were Running Windows 7). How to protect yourself: 1. Do not click on links in email or social media messages. 2. Back up your data regularly. 3. Update your operating system.
