Can any one explain what is question and answering system in nlp? What is it's use in real life and why do we need it?

NLP stands for Natural Language Processing. It is related to Machine Learning. While some call NLP a subset to ML others prefer to think vice versa.

Question Answering is a method of Information Retreival (IR). The purpose is to make machine pull out a relevant answer whenever a question is asked.

One needs to have a huge corpus available to make this technology work. The corpus could be domain specific or domain agnostic, where the latter is more challenging.

The question answer system is based on association of question tags like who what how etc with their answer pattern.

As to why do we need it, try and ask Google a question through its search engine. Google uses the entire web as its corpus and retrieves a relevant answer from one of the many websites in its database. Other uses are to create customer care bots, machine tutors in education sysyem, automated medical assistants in hospitals etc.
