Are Image Maps Still Relevant?

Are Image Maps still widely used in HTML/Javascript coding? If I work them into a project I'm working on, would I be at risk of them being phased out? Are SVGs the better way to go?

Image maps are still supported elements and would be in w3c specifications of Html for long time. . even Svg can be used to obtain same behaviour ^^ Anyway, handle bitmaps image maps is lighter with old image map feature... as Svg could handle bitmaps as shape backgrounds, but is not designed in that way. However, if you can design your image map ( or the graphical element uses for ) in vectors rather than bitmaps, Svg could be more efficient ;)
