Is visual basic still alive? I have not come across any recent certifications on it

yes, it is alive and a first class citizen of .net as Microsoft told us. vb is a beginners language which should remain easy to learn, but will not have all new developments available in c#.

Beside that there was a conference of F# community in London last month.
