Laptops have wireless capabilities. They're portable. For network programmers, a working wireless card is essential for troubleshooting layouts & I/O of network-based applications and DB-management, etc. Desktops offer more speed and power, while laptops offer versatility.

I assume the laptop is so they can work wherever they want. An extra desktop or laptop if I were to guess could be for gaming or messing around with. One for job, other Yolo's.

Many of the programmers like to work on big screens first, once apps starts to work exactly the way it should then they will begin testing them in mobile devices and for the sake of mobility they use a 13" or 15" to attend a seminar, hackathon or team meeting. It all gravitates to one's personal preferences at the end of the day. Happy coding!

Laptop for mobility, desktop for power and big screen. Both simultaneously for more screenspace (and more power too as some of your application load only CPU of laptop for example not loading the other one)
