Access is a little bit old fashioned. There are excellent open source DB managers, like MySql, Postgres, MariaDb, even SQLserver express. Nevertheless if Access is your first choice it wll be usefull to a first aproach to SQL.

i am studying databases at the moment and MS Access has helped some of my classmates get their heads around tables, relationships, PK and FK concepts to name a few areas. As long as we realise that Access is designed as a single user database unlike other DBs like MySQL that can have multiple users interacting with the data at the same time. Its a gateway that can assist in understanding just how powerful well structured data can be. By the way, great question!
