I would say work your way through the lessons slowly. Take your time. Practice writing your own codes for every new concept. If anything doesn't make sense, see if you can find help in the lesson comments. Use Google a lot. It helps to see each new concept from several different viewpoints, so I suggest looking them up in a few tutorials, for example, for Python, https://www.programiz.com/python-programming https://www.learnpython.org https://docs.python.org/3.8/tutorial/ It's a slower process but it's worth it because the knowledge you get will stick. If you're still stuck with a specific code issue, ask for help, showing what you've tried so far. The folks here love to help 😊 Good luck!

"have been programming for over 40 years but I still wouldn't say that I have "mastered" programming" Martin Taylor I feel you have mastered that, considering you got a ton of knowledge of every field outside your comfort zone (I meant electric engineer there)

I will just add one thing that to master a programming language it is not a 100 meters sprint, its a marathon with hurdles, each hurdle is your next coding level basing on each project. just keep the rhythm, be patient, keep healthy life style and results will showed up. Good Luck.
