Unfortunately I'm on little ol' Android so I can't go try it to see what's normal..

What should help people help you is...if there's exact unwanted behavior (like error / window appears for 3 seconds / console works but service down); that helps narrow down the things that often go wrong.

If you expected it to start on its own, it might not be set to (or it might start automatically on reboot). What's it do when you try to start it? Do you have logs? If you know where to look / or there's a message, is there a process exit code?

Also what OS?
